In the Serbian capital of Belgrade, 300 humanitarian-aid workers once helped refugees making the perilous journey across the Balkan Route on their way to Western Europe. But when the route “closed” in spring 2016, the journey became even more difficult, as media coverage disappeared and politicians became increasingly hostile towards those travelling to safety. Routes follows the journey of refugees and the people they encounter on the road in a bid to document the daily struggles faced by asylum seekers — as well as the obstacles put in place for those trying to help them.
